Breathing, the basics…

Breathing, hmmm, it is one of those things that we do all day and all night long, or suffer the consequences. How do I ensure that I do it even when I am so busy that my breathing becomes more shallow, less important and almost an inconvenience? Think about it. Focus, in,….out,….in,….out,….slowly, my priorities change and I realise that all those busy things that I really need to do are critical so that I can breathe at home, with my children and with my family.

More or less…

I read a very interesting chapter in John Maeda’s book ‘Simplicity’ today, it spoke about how in some cases, a certain kind of more is always better than less–more care, more love, and more meaningful actions. In the design world that I live in, I work to the mantra that less is more–less words, less on the page, less ambiguity but I realised when I read this paragraph that we do actually give more to our clients in the ways that John suggests, its the only way we can design effectively for human beings!

Emotional intelligence is now considered an important facet of leaders today, and the expression of emotion is no longer considered a weakness but a desirable human trait. Fulfillment from living a meaningful life is the ROE (Return On Emotion), I like that!!

Thoughts on tribes…

Met with a great guy called Peter yesterday who is setting up an exciting new venture, he spoke of how, as a race, we have moved from ‘We to Me’ to ‘Me to We’. I felt uncomfortable with this phrase and wondered why… After a little pondering, I realised that we have actually retained our selfishness and the whole Seth Godin tribe theory is utterly correct, what is actually happening, in my opinion, is that we now have groups of ‘Me’s’. In the past if you were in a group, metaphorically speaking, you held each others hand because you shared a common thing, now, due to the advances in technology and lifestyles, we find ourselves in little groups of Me’s. Our commonality remains but so does our selfishness. For instance, if we both have an ipad, then we share something in common so we are part of the ipad group, but our selfishness forces us to try and outdo each other through more apps, bigger memory or greater connectivity, I think this is what is helping the churn and burn mentality.

From our clients point of view, we need to be mindful about these groups of ‘Me’s’ and communicate effectively to these niche markets.
